Are you planning a trip to Korea? Then the first thing you need to know is how to use public transportation. However, buying individual tickets for each mode of transportation can be quite cumbersome and inefficient. That’s why today I’m introducing you to an essential item: the T-money card!

In this post, I’ll tell you everything from A to Z about what a T-money card is, where to buy it, how to use it, and even how to get refunds for remaining balance. With just this one guide, transportation in Korea will be no problem at all!

What is a T-money Card?

What is a T-money Card?

The T-money card is a prepaid rechargeable transportation card that can be used throughout Korea. With just one card, you can use subways, buses, some taxis, and even convenience stores, vending machines, and public bicycles.

Key Features

  • Prepaid rechargeable system: You charge it with your desired amount and use it
  • Convenient usage: Just one ‘tap’ on the card terminal and payment is complete
  • Wide range of uses: Not just transportation, but also retail stores, tourist attractions, etc.
  • Transfer discounts: Discounted fares when transferring between subway and bus

💡 Good to know: While the T-money card is Korea’s representative transportation card, other regions have different cards like Hanaro Card in Busan and DaeguPay in Daegu. However, T-money cards can be used in most regions nationwide, making them most convenient for travelers.

Where to Buy a T-money Card

T-money cards are very easy to get.

Where to buy:

  • Airports: Convenience stores in Incheon International Airport and Gimpo Airport (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, etc.)
  • Subway stations: Ticket offices or vending machines at subway stations in Seoul and major cities
  • Convenience stores: Convenience stores throughout the city (look for the T-money sign!)
  • Tourist information centers: Tourist information centers in major tourist areas like Myeongdong and Gangnam

Price: The card itself costs about 2,500 to 5,000 won, and you charge it with however much you want to use. We recommend an initial charge of about 10,000 won.

🎨 Fun design choices: Besides basic cards, there are various designs featuring K-pop idols, characters, and Korean traditional culture. They make great travel souvenirs too!

How to Charge and Use It

T-money cards use a prepaid system that you charge before using.

Where to charge:

  • Convenience stores: Just tell the staff “충전해주세요” (chung-jeon-hae-ju-se-yo) or “Top up, please”
  • Charging machines in subway stations: Multi-language support (English, Chinese, Japanese available)
  • Charging machines on buses: Available on some buses (cash only)

Charging amounts: You can charge from a minimum of 1,000 won to a maximum of 500,000 won

🔴Important note: Charging is only possible with cash. In most cases, foreign credit cards cannot be used for charging, so make sure to have enough cash ready. If you have a Korean bank card (debit card), it can be used at some charging machines.

💸 Cash preparation tip: When withdrawing cash from Korean ATMs with foreign cards, use machines marked with “Global ATM.” These are available at 7-Eleven, Citibank, KB Kookmin Bank ATMs, etc.

Where You Can Use the Card

Public Transportation

  • Subway: Available on most city lines in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, etc.
  • Buses: City buses, express buses, village buses, airport limousine buses, etc.
  • Taxis: Some taxis have card terminals (look for the T-money logo)

Other Uses

  • Convenience stores: GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, Emart24, etc.
  • Public bicycles: Seoul’s ‘Ttareungyi’ (따릉이), Busan’s ‘Nubija’ (누비자), etc.
  • Tourist attractions: Ticket purchases at some tourist sites
  • Cafes and restaurants: Some franchise stores
  • Vending machines: Beverage and snack vending machines at subway stations and public places

While T-money cards are great for transportation, you’ll still need to use other payment methods in many places. Find out how in our 2025 Guide to Paying in Korea.

How to Use One Card for Multiple People

On subways, you need one card per person. This is because only one person can pass through the turnstile with one tap.

Buses have an exception!

How to board a bus with multiple people using one card

  1. Tell the driver the number of people before boarding Example: “Three people, please.” or show the number with your fingers
  2. After the driver inputs the number of people
  3. Tap your T-money card on the terminal once, and the fare for 3 people will be automatically charged

This method is very useful when traveling with family or friends!

📱 Additional tip: Recently, there’s also a mobile T-money app that you can use with your smartphone. However, physical cards are more stable and convenient, so we recommend cards for travelers.

How to Get Refunds and Return the Card

1. Returning at Automatic Vending Machines (subway stations, etc.)

Some T-money cards (especially those for foreigners purchased at airports) can be returned at automatic vending machines to get back your deposit after use.

  • Return locations: AREX Seoul Station, Incheon Airport Station, Gimpo Airport Station, etc.
  • Items refunded upon return:
    • Card deposit (about 500 won)
    • Remaining balance (if small amount)
    • Certain fees may be deducted

2. Refund at Convenience Stores

  • If card balance is 20,000 won or less, refunds are possible at some convenience stores
  • However, you may not get back the deposit
  • 500 won fee is deducted upon refund

💡 Important refund information

  • Refunds are only available in cash
  • You must refund within 3 months of card purchase
  • Some souvenir design cards may not be refundable

Essential Tips for Travelers

⚠️ Precautions

  • If you lose your card, no refund for remaining balance: Because it’s not a registered card
  • If card is damaged: Balance transfer possible at some subway station customer service centers
  • Expiration date: 5 years from last use (balance expires after this)

🎯 Useful tips

  • Check balance: Balance is displayed when you tap at subway turnstiles or bus terminals
  • Keep receipts: May be needed for refunds, so keep your purchase receipt
  • Charge extra: Charging stations may be limited on weekends or holidays, so charge with some extra

🚌 Transportation tips

  • Night buses: Some night buses (N buses) operate during late night hours

  • Suitable for short-term travelers, but transfer discount benefits are limited

Editor’s Note

The T-money card is more than just a transportation card – it’s a magical item that enhances the convenience and efficiency of your Korean travels. Most importantly, it can be used in various places and is easy to purchase and use without complicated procedures, so I strongly recommend it to first-time visitors to Korea.

Especially features like being able to pay for multiple people with one card on buses, transfer discount benefits, and deposit refunds when returning cards are great tips that many people miss. Also, knowing practical information like the importance of cash preparation, how to use ATMs, and precautions for refunds in advance will make your trip much smoother.
